Vernon Christian School's ambitious expansion project is gaining momentum, thanks to a series of generous donations and a unique matching challenge. The school's Make Way Campus Expansion Project is set to transform the campus with a new high school gymnasium, expanded common spaces, and state-of-the-art classrooms. The project's success is a testament to the power of community support and the school's vision for the future.
The initial phase of the project has already seen significant progress, with the construction of a two-story classroom wing. This was made possible by a successful tendering process and strong early construction results. Director of Development Steve Gutknecht expressed his surprise and excitement, stating that the classroom wing was always part of the vision but was not expected to start construction for at least five years.
The campaign received a significant boost in November 2025 when a generous supporter issued a $400,000 matching challenge, doubling the impact of incoming gifts. This challenge was nearly met when an anonymous individual made an unexpected $200,000 donation in May 2026. This donation not only covered the remaining amount of the existing challenge but also brought the total campaign giving to $2.85 million as of June 2026.
The anonymous donor's generosity continued with an additional challenge, pledging to match every new donation made to the project, up to an additional $200,000, until the build is complete. This new challenge will propel the campaign beyond its original $3 million goal to a revised target of $3.25 million. Principal Matt Driediger expressed the school's awe and gratitude for the anonymous donor's gift, emphasizing its impact on reaching their goals and better serving students.
The expansion project will include a new high school gymnasium, expanded common spaces for student learning and community gatherings, two fully finished classrooms, and four additional teaching spaces within the classroom wing. Construction is progressing rapidly and is on schedule, managed by SilverRock Land Corp. With the new matching challenge in place, every new gift made to the campaign will be doubled until the challenge funds are exhausted.
